Yorkshire & Humber

Anticipated vacancies 2012:
307 GP training programmes
2 Academic Clinical Fellowships
...more

Lots of doctors want to gain experience in other cultures - many GP trainees used to take a year out. Some went Antipodean, some did VSO, and some did an academic course. They came back with valuable experience and confidence which helped them perform better. New assessments and red tape have put recent trainees off and we think this is a shame – if you are performing well in your training then taking a year out between ST2 and ST3 is an excellent idea.

To encourage trainees to gain experience before they settle into general practice we have forged links with Whanganui in New Zealand’s North Island. Trainees that pick the Hull, Barnsley or Pennine Training Programmes get a chance to work an extra year at Wanganui between ST2 and ST3.

Yorkshire offers excellent training and a great lifestyle. It’s got vibrant cross-cultural influences, superb shopping, lively pub/club scene; AND stunning countryside and coastline. Culture is strong with famous theatres and orchestras. Sports facilities are great for spectators and participants. Outdoor activities are the best – three National Parks mean that clean air and open country are always close by!

Check out Scarborough Training Programme. Where the North Yorkshire Moors National Park meets the Heritage Coast and Dracula meets Captain Cook, it’s one of our hidden gems, mixing exciting scenery with high quality teaching.

All our GP Training Programmes are 3 years duration with at least 18 months in general practice. Our trainees do well in the MRCGP exams – check out the league tables! Competition ratios are favourable and there is usually a close match between the number of vacancies and successful candidates.

Our allocation system helps you choose to work near your family home, so you can go for exciting urban Training Programmes like Hull, Leeds and Sheffield or more rural experiences in Northallerton, Airedale, or North Lincolnshire. Training is flexible and tailored to individuals and we have an academic intake linked to a masters’ degree if you fancy teaching or research.

Road, rail and air links are excellent to the rest of the UK and internationally too. House prices are reasonable whether urban flats or country cottages and schools do well in comparison tables.

Career prospects are excellent. The age profile of Yorkshire GPs means that there will be lots of retirement vacancies when you complete your training!
