NORTH LINCOLNSHIRE (Scunthorpe & Grimsby)
Specialties available are: ENT, Geriatric Medicine, Obstetrics & Gynaecology
Oncology, Paediatrics, Palliative Care
Psychiatry and Respiratory Medicine.

  • The geography of the area is that of the Lincolnshire Wolds with gently rolling countryside and the two main conurbations of Scunthorpe and Grimsby. Scunthorpe is best known as a steel town and Grimsby as a fishing port but both have had to develop a myriad of other industries in the last twenty years.
  • The programme was initially two schemes based in Grimsby and Scunthorpe which united in the early 1990s to make it stronger and more diverse.
  • Our strength is that we are a small friendly supportive scheme. We aim to help trainees to develop into complete General Practitioners so that they can provide excellent primary healthcare for their patients and also accept responsibility for their own educational development throughout their professional careers. Learning must not stop on completion of the course therefore development of a self-directed, acquisitive approach to learning is important. The half day release teaching sessions occur on Tuesdays rotating between the two district general hospitals. The majority of the teaching is in small groups.
  • We currently offer 18 months of training in general practice and the remainder in one of the local district general hospitals (Diana Princess of Wales, Grimsby or Scunthorpe General Hospital, Scunthorpe). The practices involved in training offer a wide range of experience in General Practice – large and small, town and country, dispensing and non dispensing, PMS and GMS. All practices are modern and fully equipped.

YORK

  • York is a historic city of great character. With its beautiful Minster and medieval streets, it is the second most frequently visited city in England after London. BARNSLEY
Specialties available are: Obstetrics & Gynaecology, Paediatrics, General Medicine, A & E, Psychiatry and Orthopaedic surgery.

  • Barnsley Hospital Social Club is a lively venue, and often a GP registrar acts as social secretary for the Doctors' mess. Night life in and around Barnsley is alive and kicking, and for those with more classical tastes, Sheffield and Leeds boast excellent theatres and opera houses and are in easy striking distance. The VTS has its own social calendar from 'Beer and curry nights' to wine tasting, go-karting and laser questing. There is also wonderful countryside and numerous attractions suitable for young families and those keen on sporting/outdoor activities.
  • The first GP trainer in Barnsley was a Dr Richard Crookes (1777-1845). He ran a training practice on Church Street, Barnsley. He is recorded as "a Great Swearer" whose apprentices "were regularly beaten with a walking stick". We like to think that our training methods have become more enlightened since then. Barnsley training practices operate in a broad range of settings (small and large group practices; urban and rural practices) but each one has a GP trainer who is committed to providing good quality education.
  • We have introduced a two-day residential course for all Registrars on the scheme. This runs every February and provides an opportunity to get away from hospital and the practice and to look into important topics in more depth. It also provides an excellent opportunity for social bonding (judging by last years bar bill!). We also run a two-day MRCGP course each year – this longstanding course provides important preparation for the MRCGP exam. There are also opportunities for social events such as kart racing, greyhound racing, bowling etc. These social events provide an informal way for our Registrars to get to know each other, the Programmer Directors and Trainers.
  • The Barnsley Vocational Training Scheme for General Practice provides GP registrars with a tailor-made package of educational and personal support to enable them to develop into confident, competent and well-balanced general practitioners. Our aim is to enable new GPs to attain the highest standards of care for their patients, whilst maintaining a satisfying family and personal life.

Specialties available are: ENT, Geriatric Medicine, Obstetrics & Gynaecology
Oncology, Paediatrics, Palliative Care, Psychiatry and Respiratory Medicine.

Doncaster has a new international airport and its centre has undergone regeneration including the development of an Education City campus, currently the largest education investment of its kind in the UK. Doncaster is also home to one of the oldest and largest racecourses in the country.
  • We are fortunate, as a scheme to be large enough to be able to offer a wide diversity of practices. Most of our practices are involved in undergraduate training; some in pre-registration house officer training; and all our practices have at least 2 approved GP trainers to provide continuity of support. Practices vary from small market town dispensing to suburban and town centre, and there are opportunities for practice exchange to provide a wide diversity of learning situations.
  • All out of hours work is covered by GP Co-Operative resulting in sensible out of hours rotas, supervised by experienced principals.
  • Historically, half of our VTS registrars have stayed on to work in Doncaster and district and our innovative Health Authority and PCTs are keen to see this tradition continue. Salaried posts are often available to bridge the cap between training and full partnership.
