SOUTHWEST PENINSULA DEANERY
The South West Peninsula Postgraduate Deanery is a new organisation
taking effect from 1st April 05 and covers the counties of Devon and
Cornwall from our base in Plymouth. The GP Directorate is responsible
for training and developing the GP workforce fit for purpose for the
challenging and complex world of modern Primary Care.
We have 5 Vocational Training Schemes, all in delightful parts of the
world with beautiful countryside and miles and miles of coastline.
They are based in Exeter, Barnstaple, Torbay, Plymouth and Truro. The
vast majority of our GP Registrars decide to stay and work in the area
once they qualify.
We are committed to offering a friendly and accessible service,
delivering high quality, innovative education and training producing
high quality GPs. It is our aim to develop a culture of lifelong
learning, support and fun.

Cornwall
- Most of the hospital posts in the training scheme are at the
Royal Cornwall Hospital in Truro, right in the middle of one of the
most beautiful and interesting areas of England
- The Cornwall Vocational Training Scheme for General Practice has
been developed over many years.
- The scheme aims to provide the prospective GP with an excellent
range of experience and training and many Cornwall VTS registrars
subsequently succeed in becoming GP principals in Cornish or other
West Country practices.
- Fellowship by Assessment of the Royal College of General
Practitioners is acknowledged to be the rigorous assessment of
quality in General Practice. In 1998 the Tamar Faculty had the
highest number of FBAs in the country, a reflection of the overall
excellence of General Practice in the County.

North Devon
- If you are looking to get the perfect balance between education
and lifestyle, then North Devon is the place for you. We aim to give
you an excellent educational experience, whilst at the same time
offering an unrivalled scope of ways to unwind.
- It also provides excellent pastoral and peer support, much
valued as doctors move through the 3 year educational programme.
- It is a small, friendly and responsive scheme in an isolated,
largely rural and very beautiful part of the southwest peninsula.
This ideal of a warm community spirit is backed up with the NDDH's
award of a recent SAGA Hospital of the Year award.
- For those who like to get out and about there is a wealth of
golden beaches, safe bathing waters, the chance to go horse riding
and some spectacular walks along glorious coastlines that offer some
of the best surfing in the country.

Plymouth
- A major role of the scheme is to support you whilst you are
undertaking a considerable change from trainee to competent GP. It
aims to do this in two ways. Firstly by encouraging you to become a
member of a group of colleagues by providing a social and
educational programme where you can enjoy meeting and learning
together. Secondly, by offering experienced Course Organisers and
Trainers who fully understand the kinds of personal and professional
issues you may encounter and who are available for confidential
mentoring.
- Set in the far south west of Devon, we can boast easy access to
the best beaches on both sides of the peninsula.
- A dream for surfers, sailors, divers an anybody else who enjoys
getting wet in or on the sea. With lots of schools and clubs there
are lots of opportunities for complete beginners. And for those
preferring dry feet the entire coastline has a footpath around it
offering 630 miles of exploring.
- At any one time there are approximately 12 specialist trainees (STs)
in each year of the three-year scheme (ST1, ST2 and ST3), working in
hospital posts and GP training practices. We also have close links
to the services, with mainly Royal Navy Doctors, both in hospital
and GP posts, attending the educational programme and other events.

available and shows the commitment held for top-quality training.
