EAST OF ENGLAND DEANERY
The
East of England Deanery extends from the Wash to the Thames. It covers
historic cities such as Norwich and Cambridge, extensive rural areas
and varied east coast towns from Great Yarmouth to Aldeburgh to
Southend. It also includes inner city areas such as South Essex and
Peterborough, 'new' towns such as Letchworth and Welwyn Garden City
and leafy parts of rural Essex and Hertfordshire. There are good
transport links to London and other key cities. We challenge anybody
not to feel at home in the environment of at least one of the schemes
on offer.
Tucked away far from the madding crowd, the former East Anglia
Deanery co-ordinated the innovative approach of its individual
schemes. The pioneering Ipswich scheme 35 years ago set a model of
self-directed and supportive learning that is still relevant today and
has influenced all the more recent schemes. Perhaps there was a danger
we would rest on our laurels until we were propelled into the 21st
century by our amalgamation with Essex and Hertfordshire. Now we
combine innovation with consistent high standards for the delivery of
education. And we thrive on constructive feedback from those in
training.
There are a number of schemes (see below) offering programmes to suit the
requirements of the applicant and some programmes include 18 months in
general practice.

We were the first scheme to introduce the eighteen months in
practice, eighteen months in hospital rotation in the region. All
rotations have six months in practice during the first year. The
last year is also spent in practice. Registrars are attached to 2
different practices during their rotation. This has always been
popular with registrars.
Applicants' needs are taken into consideration when offering
hospital posts and practice placements and we try to be as
flexible as possible.
We support registrars who want to take up special skills
training and/or plan to become GPs with a special interest in
another clinical speciality.
We are friendly and supportive. All registrars have a programme
director who is their educational supervisor throughout their time
on the VTS.

Chelmsford
Chelmsford GP Specialist Training Scheme currently has an
intake of 12 in August and 4 in February giving a total of 48
trainees in the 3 year scheme. There are three six month hospital
posts and 18 months general practice training. We are fortunate
enough to have four six month innovative posts every year in place
of a hospital job. The Innovative posts include, Palliative care,
Dermatology, Ophthalmology and Minor surgery outpatients and one
session in general practice.
Every Monday afternoon during term time there is a half day
study course at the local hospital which is both educationally
beneficial and a forum for the trainees to meet and exchange ideas
and support. Once a year there is a three day residential course,
which has proved very popular and is an ideal opportunity to get
away to evaluate and consolidate ideas and concepts.
There are excellent training practices in the scheme, both in
the town of Chelmsford and in the surrounding villages. Our
teaching emphasises experiential and problem based learning, both
in small and large group settings. Trainee feedback has been very
positive and many trainees have stayed on and joined local
practices."

Ipswich
We provide an enjoyable, high-quality scheme for
General Practice training in a most attractive part of the
country. We recognise the importance of achieving a balance
between a sound academic education and an enjoyable quality of
life. Over the years our GP trainees have come from a wide variety
of backgrounds and gone on to achieve great things in their future
careers.
Our three-year scheme was one of the first to be introduced in
this country in 1967. It offers an excellent rotation of hospital
posts, and a high standard of training in a variety of teaching
practices.
The scheme usually takes up to 13 hospital based trainees every
August and this group goes through the three year training
programme together. We aim to support our trainees both at work
and with their personal life as a result we attempt to adapt the
hospital rotation to the individual needs of each trainee. We will
ensure that your individual learning needs are addressed
throughout the three years you are with us.
In the general practice year our high course organiser to
trainee ratio allows us to provide a whole day release. Most
schemes make do with a half day. We believe that the personal and
educational companionship offered by this arrangement has made a
significant contribution to the success of the Ipswich Scheme.

in the hospital, which is situated within easy reach of London and
Cambridge. The group of specialist trainees on the scheme are

pubs etc. Training practices are located in villages or market
towns. Our committed group of friendly trainers is keen to help
each young GP realise his/her potential.
There is full support for all the trainees embarking on their
nMRCGP (including a self-directed learning group.) Then scheme is
proud of many past merits and distinctions.
Participants will spend 18 months of their training in the

Luton
The scheme also encompasses Dunstable and several surrounding
villages and Harpenden, affluent commuter town. We are an
expanding VTS with several enthusiastic new training practices
offering a range of experiences from ethnic minority groups,
social deprivation to farmers and stockbrokers. Luton is a
University town with a vibrant social scene and there is a good
train service to London. The football team needs your support.
We are keen to encourage our registrars to do MRCGP. We offer
specific courses for consultation skills and minor surgery and
some one-to-one dermatology training.
STs attend five 2 day Block teaching sessions over the year
which is an enjoyable unique experience and included consultation
skills training. Group teaching in the Registrar Year is focussed
around the Tuesday morning half day release where we enjoy
learning together and we cover an interesting and stimulating

N.W. Herts
The West Herts VTS is one of the biggest Vocational Training
Schemes within the East of England Deanery and we admit about 20
new learners every year. Although most of the hospital jobs, and
the teaching programme are based at Watford Hospital our Training
practices also cover a much very wider area including Hemel
Hempstead, St Albans, Bushey Berkhamsted and Chorleywood and
everywhere in between!Everybody spends 18 months of the 3 year
programme in GP and all the rotations include 4 months of paeds
and 4 months of obs. There are a vast array of other posts
including general medicine, A& E, GUM, Dermatology and Psychiatry.
The half day release is run by the 4 programme directors who
organise separate teaching for the ST1 and ST3 years. Most of
teaching for the ST2 year is provided by the hospital departments
but they also have three modular days a year with General Practice
teaching.
The four programme directors are all very experienced teachers
and two of them are CSA examiners and we believe that that one of
our stand out features is the quality of our teaching and
preparation for the CSA exam.
We also go on trips! The last year has included a day trip to Nice
in the South of France and we are shortly to go Xmas shopping in
Paris.

which is only 50 minutes by Train to London and 45 minutes from
Cambridge. Housing is still reasonably priced. There has been a VT Scheme in Peterborough since 1973. We have
an excellent mix of Inner City, Market Town and Rural Practices
with very enthusiastic Trainers. GP Registrars meet every Tuesday
afternoon for their half-day release. The Registrars plan the
educational Programme with the help of the Programme Directors. We
hold an annual Residential Course and also run Consultation Skills
Workshops with the help of Actors, Child Health Surveillance
Courses and day-long Symposia. Many of our GP Registrars have stayed in the area and are now
joining the Scheme as Trainers and Course Organisers.

Southend
The Southend VTS is an innovative scheme, which has been in
operation since 1998. Our scheme operates in the following manner:
In ST1 you will rotate in a selection of four month hospital posts
chosen between the specialities of Obstetrics & Gynaecology,
Paediatrics, Medicine for the Elderly, Psychiatry and Palliative
Care.
In ST2 you will spend 6 months in one of the following hospital
posts; A+E, Oncology / Ophthalmology or DME / DAU as well as 6
months in GP
In ST3 you will spend 12 months in GP

account of previous experience.
We have young, enthusiastic trainers for the GP based posts in
a range of practices giving excellent exposure to the challenges
of primary care
Our half day educational programme runs on Wednesday afternoons
and In addition to this we have an annual residential course. Our
programme aims to address the GP curriculum, including preparation
for the nMRCGP and we are helped by the fact that one of our
programme directors is an RCGP examiner
We believe in enjoying ourselves while we learn and have built
up an enviable reputation as being a good place to train. All this
and the Pier too!

meets weekly throughout the year. This allows us more flexibility
in the topics we cover, which gives you greater choice. By meeting
so regularly, we build a strong support network within the group.
We run a highly enjoyable annual Residential, and organise lots of

Welwyn Garden City
The Queen Elizabeth II Hospital, situated on the outskirts of
Welwyn Garden City, continues to offer a wide range of acute
services through its merger with the Lister Hospital in Stevenage
forming the East and North Herts NHS Trust. We have a very active
and supportive Postgraduate Medical Centre.Welwyn itself is a
very attractive leafy town in Hertfordshire with John Lewis Stores
& the Howards Shopping Centre, as well as being close to the A1(M)
and only 25 minutes on the train to Kings Cross!
Social opportunities and housing are plentiful with excellent
schools locally.
We are an expanding, happy scheme with a high conversion rate to
local GPs, which has learned to adapt to the new NHS, but remained
focused on General Practice. The emphasis is on peer-support,
facilitation of self-directed learning, encouraging
self-confidence and having fun.
The Scheme starts with 4 months in General Practice, followed
by 2 four month hospital posts at ST1. In the ST2 year there is a
GP innovative post with 50% ambulatory clinics in a variety of
specialties, followed by a further two 4 month hospital posts. The
final 12 months of ST3 is spent entirely in a different one of the
GP training practices.
Our 10 training practices are high achieving, forward thinking and
enthusiastic, spread from Ware to Cheshunt to Potters Bar. We have
a large bank of trainers and associate trainers in the practices
offering training to all grades of learner.
