a great place to live and work - a lovely location, with good quality
of life for doctors. It is a young city with good social and sporting
facilities. The atmosphere is relaxed and friendly. There is a good
social life with others on VTS and they are a great bunch of people.
There are 3 different Vocational Training Schemes based at the new
Worcestershire Royal Hospital, with good teaching and support for GP
training from the hospital consultants. There are also opportunities
to do 2 hospital jobs in the Blue Mountains, Australia. The scheme

East
Birmingham/Solihull |
East
Birmingham consists of sprawling housing estates, private and council.
There are pockets of extreme poverty, high ethnicity plus private
housing and the odd stately home. North Solihull covers Chelmsley
Wood, a 1960s large housing estate. South Solihull is the home of Land
Rover with leafy suburbs, modern and expensive housing estates
bordering the Warwickshire countryside. There is easy access to
Birmingham centre, and the M42 / NEC / airport are all on the patch |

South
Birmingham |
The South
Birmingham Scheme evolved over many years and has been a 'mixed'
scheme for a decade, introducing SHOs to the concepts of general
practice, while providing support and an educational base for SHOs and
registrars together. We are a "learner-led"; organised into five
groups, each facilitated by one of the course organisers. We also meet
as the larger group to make use of visiting experts. We meet at the
Selly Oak Postgraduate Centre for at least 30 Thursday afternoons a
year. We also go on a two day residential in September, and an 'away
day' in the spring.
All participants are encouraged to attend courses (family planning,
minor surgery, child health surveillance etc) during the scheme.

Dudley |
Dudley VTS in one of the longest
established schemes in the Region. It has always been very successful
in recruiting doctors to a very mixed area in the Black Country, and
have consistently innovated in the last few years, developing online
feedback and job assessment tools that have been presented at national
conferences. We have already completed of full cycle of the new
curriculum, and have placed great emphasis on "learner centered"
education. Our success at MRCGP has been consistent. We meet every
Thursday at the Clinical Education Centre at Russells Hall Hospital,
Dudley and have a two day residential and away day. |

Wolverhampton & Walsall |
Wolverhampton
and Walsall scheme have been established for many years and have
provided some superb training opportunities for Vocational Training
for General Practice.
We have been the first scheme to embrace the new RCGP Curriculum as
the foundation of the Course.
The Course is integrated with the Masters Degree in Primary Care at
Stafford University and you will be expected to enroll and to work to
Diploma/Certificate or even possibly Masters level.
Most schemes will involve a four monthly attachment to General
Practice in the first year in addition to the twelve months GP
Registrar post in the third year.
The Wolverhampton and Walsall scheme provide an excellent range of
posts in all relevant specialties and every effort is made to tailor
these to your individual need. Each doctor on the scheme has their own
Primary Care Educational Supervisor who supervises the whole training
and is able to change rotations around and give pastoral and career
support.
Wolverhampton and Walsall have excellent housing, good schools both
state run and private. There are superb leisure facilities locally and
several notable and not so notable football teams. For the energetic,
there are the Shropshire Hills on the doorstep – shops for you to drop
in and the night life in the re-energised University City of
Wolverhampton is cool. The Wolverhampton Medical Institute where much
of the teaching occurs is state of the art with great libraries and IT
resources. |

Stafford
& Cannock |
Stafford
& Cannock Vocational Training Scheme offers a three year rotation centred around
the hospitals and general practices in the County Town of Stafford,
Cannock and surrounding villages.
The Vocational Training Scheme is based at the modern purpose built
Postgraduate Centre adjacent to the Staffordshire General Hospital,
Weston Road, Stafford. This has full library and information
technology services and offers outstanding facilities.
The scheme is based around 4 month attachments in hospital and in
primary care, prior to the Registrar Year. The VTS release has a
supportive atmosphere and involves consultants and primary care
specialists in delivering relevant and patient centred information
enabling GP registrars to gain a good grounding in general practice. |

North
Staffs |
The North
Staffordshire Vocational Training Scheme is long established and well
known for providing a high quality hospital experience, followed by
teaching in enthusiastic local Practices, both urban and rural. Many
ex-registrars have entered practices within the district, building
strong forward thinking partnerships and keeping in contact with each
other, for education and support in the early years of their GP
careers.
The Course Organisers and the Programme Directors have worked hard
together to change the scheme to its present form. SHO’s undertake a
modular training instead of the traditional Thursday half-day release.
The scheme modules are based on the MMedSci course at Keele
University. SHO’s can obtain enough credits from the modules of
teaching to be awarded a Certificate or Diploma in Primary Care.
An academic pathway has been established to enable participants to
gain a Certificate, Diploma or Masters degree in Medical Science
whilst participating in the scheme. SHOs are mentored and supported
throughout their course. |

Burton
on Trent |
Burton upon
Trent? Where? Situated between Derby and Lichfield, within reach of
Birmingham, Stratford upon Avon, Leicester, the Peak District and
Welsh borders, it is a market town - famed for its breweries. The
posts are based at Queen's Hospital - which boasts Charter Marks and
probably the best computer system in Britain!
We aim to provide choice - hospital jobs are from - ENT/Ophthalmology,
Paediatrics, Care of the Elderly, Medicine, Obsterics & Gynaecology,
Public Health and A&E.
Both consultants and GPs are committed to working together, and see a
strong scheme as essential for the future health scene in our area -
so you will find good teaching, relevant posts and listening senior
staff - who do change posts for the benefit of juniors! So why this
choice and commitment? Because we believe in the individual as person
with skills and strengths, who needs the responsibility and scope to
further their own career. |
