We innovated the
eighteen months in practice, eighteen months in hospital rota in the
region. All rotations start with six months in practice. This has been
popular with registrars.
Applicants’ needs are taken into consideration when offering
hospital posts with shorter rotations being possible for applicants
who have completed some of their hospital posts.
We support registrars who want to take up special skills training,
and/or plan to become GPs with a special interest in another clinical
speciality.
We are friendly and supportive. All registrars have a GP trainer
who is their educational supervisor throughout their time on the VTS.

The scheme consists of
two years in four six monthly hospital posts in Geriatric Medicine,
Obstetrics & Gynaecology, Paediatrics, A & E or Oncology. Following
the hospital component, a year in general practice is then taken in
one of the training practices attached to the vocational training
scheme. The teaching practices are very varied from single-handed
practices on the coast, to group practices both in country and town
locations.
Training comprises of half-day releases which is compulsory during
the year in General Practice. It is also expected that SHOs will
attend whilst in the hospital posts. |

Huntingdon |
The Huntingdon GP Vocational Training
Scheme is uniquely co-located at the new Oak Tree Community Health
Centre and at Hinchingbrooke Hospital, both in Huntingdon. Huntingdon
is a attractive market town situated on a river, in an area of small
towns and including two of the largest man-made lakes in England. It
is a short drive from the University City of Cambridge, and less than
an hour away by train from London and by car from Stansted Airport –
so a relaxed lifestyle can be interspersed by big city excitement, as
desired. Our three year VTS features: a small, informal, friendly,
registrar-led scheme; top quality trainers and training practices; an
enthusiastic Course Organiser team, one a practising GP and the other
a non-medical expert in medical education and assessment; a pleasant,
safe environment in which to live; a convenient location for getting
to Cambridge and London; and good national and international
transportation links. |

The Scheme admits approximately 5 or 6
entrants each August to the two or three year programme. As some
applicants only require one year of hospital SHO posts on the scheme
we have the flexibility to offer them the two-year programme. The
first one or two years are spent in selected posts including
Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Paediatrics, A&E, ENT, Palliative Care,
Psychiatry or Care of the Elderly. During this period there is a
half-day release each week on a Tuesday during term times. The third
year is spent in a local training practice, ranging from urban to
rural, large to small, and offers a high standard of training. A
WHOLE-DAY release is provided in this year making us somewhat unique
and it is believed that this arrangement has made a significant
contribution to the success of this Scheme. |

Lister, Stevenage |
The Lister scheme is
flourishing! There is a good atmosphere in the hospital, which is
situated within easy reach of London and Cambridge. The VTS group is
‘fantastically welcoming, supportive and energetic’. Stevenage is
surrounded by beautiful countryside with village pubs etc. Training
practices are located in villages or market towns. Our committed group
of friendly trainers is keen to help each young GP realise his/her
potential.
There is full support for those wishing to undertake MRCGP
(including a self-directed study group). The scheme is proud of many
past merits and distinctions.
Participants do one month in general practice before 2 years of
hospital posts and a final 11 months in a practice. The scheme meets
on Wednesday afternoons and enjoys a 2 day annual residential. All
members of the group are involved in planning the content and format
of the programme. There are also social gatherings throughout the
year. |

Luton |
The scheme also
encompasses Dunstable and several surrounding villages and Harpenden,
affluent commuter town. We are an expanding VTS with several
enthusiastic new training practices offering a range of experiences
from ethnic minority groups, social deprivation to farmers and
stockbrokers. Luton is a University town with a vibrant social scene
and there is a good train service to London. The football team needs
your support.
We are keen to encourage our registrars to do MRCGP. We offer
specific courses for consultation skills and minor surgery and some
one-to-one dermatology training.
SHOs attend a unique twice yearly Block week of training which is
an enjoyable unique experience and included consultation skills
training. Group teaching in the Registrar Year is focussed around the
Tuesday morning half day release where we enjoy learning together and
we cover an interesting and stimulating programme. |

The VTS is set in leafy Hertfordshire but is within
easy commuting distance of North London via the M1 and M25. We have
eight SHO posts (Paeds, O&G, Psychiatry, Elderly Medicine, A&E) in two
rotations plus a variable number of part-time SHOs linked to the VTS.
We have 18 trainers and capacity for about 12 self construct GP
Registrars each year. The half-day release course is held on Tuesday
afternoons and the GP Registrars are actively involved in planning the
programme. Dr Covell runs an MRCGP study group which follows the VTS
meetings and has a good pass rate.
The highlights of the scheme include the annual
residential course, dermatology teaching and the opportunities for
periods of extended training in a variety of clinical specialities.

Peterborough |
Peterborough is a
growing Cathedral City which is only 50 minutes by Train to London
and 45 minutes from Cambridge. Housing is still reasonably priced.
There has been a VT Scheme in Peterborough since 1973. We have an
excellent mix of Inner City, Market Town and Rural Practices with very
enthusiastic Trainers. GP Registrars meet every Tuesday afternoon for
their half-day release. The Registrars plan the educational Programme
with the help of the Course Organisers. We hold an annual Residential
Course and also run Consultation Skills Workshops with the help of
Actors, Child Health Surveillance Courses and day-long Symposia.
Many of our GP Registrars have stayed in the area and are now
joining the Scheme as Trainers and Course Organisers. |

Watford |
Watford has one of the
best established VTS schemes in the UK. Rather than termly, the VTS
half –day release meets weekly throughout the year. This allows us
more flexibility in the topics we cover, which gives you
greater choice. By meeting so regularly, we build a strong support
network within the group. We run a highly enjoyable annual
Residential, and organise lots of trips & social events, Our most
recent group outing was to Copenhagen. So not only do we have fun but
everyone passes the MRCGP! |

Welwyn Garden City |
Situated on the
outskirts of the Garden City, the Hospital, built in the Sixties, has
recently merged with the Lister Hospital forming the East and North
Herts NHS Trust. We have a very active supportive Postgraduate Centre.
It is close to the A1(M) and has an excellent train-link into Kings
Cross.
This has remained a happy scheme which has learnt to adapt to the
new NHS but remained focused on General Practice. The emphasis is on
facilitation of Self-Directed learning, encouraging self-confidence
and having fun.
The Scheme starts with one month in General Practice, followed by 4
six month SHO Posts and a further 11 months in General Practice.
There are seven training practices with eleven trainers. |
